Everything You need to Know about AWS A5.11
Overview
AWS A5.11 is a commonly used standard. It is mainly used as a reference for nickel and nickel alloy welding electrodes. The standard covers many different grades. If you need to purchase nickel alloy welding electrode products, you must know more about this standard.
In this article, we will introduce the noteworthy requirements in AWS A5.11 in terms of grades, chemical composition, and mechanical properties. We believe it will be of great help to your purchase.
Grades & Chemical Composition
Grades
There are 39 grades in AWS A5.11. Among them, ENi-1 is pure nickel, and the rest are nickel alloys. They all have very good corrosion resistance. All grades in the standard are listed below:
In the previous article, we introduced the naming rules of various grades in the AWS A5.14 standard. In AWS A5.11, grades also have the same naming rules:
Among them, E stands for electrode. This represents the material that can be used as an electrode for welding.
Categories represent the main chemical compositon of the material. In AWS A5.11, there are mainly the following common categories: NiCu, NiCr, NiCrFe, NiMo, NiCrMo. For example: NiCu stands for nickel-copper alloy, and its main components are nickel and copper.
Numbers represent alloys of the same class but with different compositions. For example: ENiCrMo-3 and ENiCrMo-4 are both nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys, but the former has more chromium and the latter has more molybdenum.
In addition, some alloys in AWS A5.11 can correspond to some commonly used Monel, Inconel, Incoloy and Hastelloy alloys. For example, ENiCu-7 corresponds to Monel 400, and ENiCrMo-3 corresponds to Inconel 625. However, the corresponding two alloys are not necessarily exactly the same, and some have subtle differences in chemical composition, and some even have different UNS numbers.
There are fewer grades in AWS A5.11 compared to AWS A5.14. However, almost every grade in AWS A5.11 can be found in AWS A5.14. It is worth noting that even if it is the same grade, the chemical composition in the two standards is different. Therefore, please confirm carefully when purchasing.
