Everything You need to Know about ASTM B670
Overview
ASTM B670 is mainly applicable to Inconel 718 (UNS N07718), which specifies products including sheet, plate, coil and strip. This standard material is primarily used for high temperature applications. In this article, we will summarize the important points and details of ASTM B670. This helps you have more control over quality when purchasing materials.
Grades & Chemical Composition
Grades
ASTM B670 contains only one material: Inconel 718 (UNS N07718). Inconel 718 is a precipitation strengthened superalloy. It itself has very good high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Through solution treatment and aging treatment, it can obtain very high high temperature strength. Therefore, it is often used in many extreme environments.

Product Properties
Products in ASTM B670
ASTM A670 applies to sheet, plate, coil and strip. Generally speaking, the thickness is 0.25 to 6.4mm, and the material produced by cold rolling is defined as sheet. And the thickness is 4.8 to 57.2mm, and the material produced by hot rolling is defined as plate. The coil is a rolled sheet or plate. The width of the strip is much narrower than that of the coil. It can be obtained by slitting the coil, or it can be obtained directly by cold rolling. Strip tends to have higher strength.

Delivery State
Inconel 718 can be significantly increased in strength by aging treatment.
The standard specifies that Inconel 718 should be delivered in the annealed condition by default. But at the same time, the supplier needs to ensure that the material can reach the mechanical properties specified in the above table after aging treatment. Of course, you can also make a request to the supplier if you need the material to be delivered directly in an aging condition.
For Inconel 718, precipitation heat treatment (aging treatment) shall consist of heating to 1325±25°F (718±14°C), hold at temperature for 8 h, furnace cool to 1150±25°F (621±14°C), hold until total aging treatment time has reached 18 h, and then air cool.

Edge
For Inconel 718 sheets and plates, unless the customer has a special request, the supplier shall supply them in the form of sheared or slit edge.
For Inconel 718 strips, the standard specifies two types of edges for the material: square-edge and round-edge. Strips are delivered with square-edge by default if there is no special request. If the customer requires round-edge, the supplier shall round the edge of the material after the cold rolling of the material is completed.
Flatness
For Inconel 718 plates, the standard additionally specifies the flatness of the material. Please refer to the table below for specific requirements:

Certification
Suppliers should issue material test certificate as required before shipment. The content of the certificate should include supplier information, customer information, standards, delivery state, product form, size, chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat number and other special requirements.
Conclusion
ASTM B670 is mainly applicable to the production of Inconel 718 sheet, plate, coil and strip. The standard clearly stipulates the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the material. In addition, the standard additionally specifies the edge and flatness of the material. The supplier shall produce the material according to the standard and provide the corresponding material test certificate before shipment.
