Everything You need to Know about ASTM B167
Overview
ASTM B167 is a very commonly used standard for nickel alloy seamless pipe and tube. This standard specifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties of different nickel alloy materials and various requirements applicable to seamless pipes. This article will detail the noteworthy requirements of ASTM B167. If you have any need to use this material, this is definitely what you need to know.
Grades & Chemical Composition
Grades
ASTM B167 contains commonly used nickel-chromium alloys. When further subdivided, these materials can be categorized as nickel-chromium-iron alloys (Inconel 600, 601, 602CA, 690, 693, etc.), nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloys (Inconel 617), and nickel-iron-chromium-tungsten alloys (UNS N06674).

What these alloys have in common is that they all contain nickel and chromium. Nickel gives the alloy excellent structural stability. Chromium brings resistance to oxidizing environments to the alloy.
The supplier shall perform the chemical analysis of the alloy in accordance with ASTM B880.
Product Properties
Products in ASTM B167
Typical products in ASTM B167 are seamless pipe and tube. It is a tubular material. Seamless pipe and tube are often produced by cold rolling or cold drawing. It does not have welds like welded pipes. Therefore, its sealing performance and pressure resistance are far ahead of the former. However, the production process of seamless pipes is more complex, the production cost is higher, and the cycle is longer. Therefore, you can choose whether to use seamless pipes according to your needs when actually selecting materials.
Mechanical Properties
The alloys in ASTM B167 are all solid solution alloys. At the same time, there are few effective solid solution strengthening elements in these alloys. Therefore, their strength is relatively limited. However, the plasticity of these materials is often very good.

Delivery State
Materials in ASTM B167 have the following delivery statuses:
Hot processing: For seamless pipes, hot rolling is generally used. It refers to the extrusion and deformation of materials at high temperatures. Hot working retains some work hardening, so the material strength in this delivery state increases slightly. Hot working is generally suitable for seamless pipes with thicker walls.
Cold working: Cold working is generally cold rolling and cold drawing. Among them, cold rolling can make the material have higher dimensional accuracy, and cold drawing can make the material obtain better mechanical properties. Cold working can greatly increase the strength of the material, but it can also make the material less plastic.
Annealed: Annealed is the most common delivery condition for seamless pipes. It completely eliminates work hardening of the material. In this delivery state, the material has the best plasticity and its strength decreases.
In actual projects, different delivery statuses should be adopted based on actual usage requirements.

Hydrostatic Test
ASTM B167 stipulates that each seamless pipe must undergo strict hydrostatic testing. And different delivery states of different materials need to be tested with different pressures.
Certification
Suppliers should provide standard-compliant material test certificates before shipment. The certificate needs to contain transaction information, standards, delivery status, product performance, chemical composition and other information.
Conclusion
ASTM B167 is a standard for nickel-chromium alloy seamless pipe & tube. The standard stipulates the chemical composition, mechanical properties, delivery status, hydrostatic test and other requirements of the material. Suppliers shall produce corresponding materials according to these requirements.
