Overview

Inconel 600 and Incoloy 800 are both commonly used superalloys. Their performance is similar. But in every respect, Inconel 600 performs better than Incoloy 800. In contrast, Incoloy 800 has a cheaper price and can replace Inconel 600 in some applications.

Introduction

Inconel 600

INCONEL® (nickel-chromium-iron) alloy 600 (UNS N06600 / W.Nr. 2.4816) is a standard engineering material for applications which require resistance to corrosion and heat. The alloy also has excellent mechanical properties and presents the desirable combination of high strength and good workability.

Incoloy 800

INCOLOY alloy 800 (UNS N08800 / W.Nr. 1.4876) is a widely used material for construction of equipment requiring corrosion resistance, heat resistance, strength, and stability for service up to 1500°F (816°C). Alloy 800 offers general corrosion resistance to many aqueous media and, by virtue of its content of nickel, resists stress corrosion cracking. At elevated temperatures it offers resistance to oxidation, carburization, and sulfidation along with rupture and creep strength.

Inconel 600 has better purity than Incoloy 800. This is mainly reflected in the content of silicon and manganese. For superalloys, silicon and manganese are in most cases harmful elements. They affect the instantaneous properties and lasting properties of the alloy.

Therefore, Inconel 600 has stricter control of harmful elements than Incoloy 800. It has a better foundation in material properties.

More iron was added to Incoloy 800 for cost savings. In contrast, Incoloy 800 contains less nickel than Inconel 600. A lower nickel content will inevitably lead to a decrease in the corrosion resistance of the material.

To reduce this effect, Incoloy 800 was added with more chromium to improve the oxidation resistance of the material. Incoloy 800 also incorporates some aluminum, which further enhances its high temperature corrosion resistance.

Overall, the oxidation resistance of Inconel 600 is better than that of Incoloy 800.

Inconel 600 and Incoloy 800 are solid solution strengthened alloys. In these two alloys, the only solid solution strengthening elements are chromium and iron.

In solid solution strengthening alloys, the solid solution strengthening elements enter the austenite matrix by way of dissolution. Therefore, the amount of austenite in the alloy is an important factor affecting the strengthening effect. The higher the nickel content, the more austenitic structure in the alloy.

Although there are more strengthening elements in Incoloy 800, it has more iron and less nickel than Inconel 600. This results in an insufficient amount of austenite.

Therefore, in general, Inconel 600 has better mechanical properties than Incoloy 800.

Application

It can be seen that the application range of the two alloys is very close. Most are high temperature applications. In these applications, it is necessary to choose Inconel 600 or Incoloy 800 according to different working environments and different parts.

In general, Inconel 600 should be selected in highly corrosive environments. Otherwise, choose Incoloy 800.

Although the Incoloy 800 is inferior to the Inconel 600 in most aspects, due to its relatively low price, Incoloy 800 is a better choice in some situations where the performance requirements are not as high.

Conclusion

Inconel 600 is a high performance superalloy with excellent high temperature corrosion resistance. The Incoloy 800 came after the Inconel 600 and was a low-cost alternative to the Inconel 600.

Inconel 600 is better than Incoloy 800 in most aspects. You need to choose these two alloys according to the actual situation of your project.
