How to Convert Pipe Fitting Size?

Elbow, reducer, tee, cap need to refer to the Nominal Pipe Schedule and ASME B16.9 for conversion. The Nominal Pipe Schedule determines the outer diameter and wall thickness of the pipe fittings, and ASME B16.9 lists the necessary dimensions unique to different pipe fittings. We need to refer to both standards when converting the dimensions.

↓ Main Body ↓

Overview

Pipe fittings are commonly used materials that are responsible for connecting different pipes together. However, pipe fittings come in many types and complex shapes. Its size representation method is often confusing. Even many people who have worked in the metal industry for a long time may not be able to clearly understand how to convert the size of pipe fittings into what they are familiar with. In this article, we will introduce different types of pipe fittings and how to convert their sizes one by one.

Introduction to ASME B16.9 and Nominal Pipe Schedule

Before understanding different pipe fittings, it is necessary to first understand the ASME B16.9 standard and Nominal Pipe Schedule.

Nominal Pipe Schedule is a way to indicate pipe size. Its typical form is:

1" SCH40

1" is the NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) value, which indicates the outer diameter of the pipe. SCH40 indicates the wall thickness of the pipe. It can be converted to the more familiar OD×THK form through the Nominal Pipe Schedule. If you are unfamiliar with this, we recommend that you read our previous article that introduces the Nominal Pipe Schedule in detail:

Due to the complex shapes of pipe fittings, only the outer diameter and wall thickness cannot well represent their size. They also require other dimensional parameters, and ASME B16.9 stipulates the dimensional parameters required for different types of pipe fittings and defines their conversion methods. They will be introduced in detail below.

Elbow Size

Classification of Elbows

An elbow is a pipe fitting that allows a pipe to turn. Therefore, according to the angle of the turn, elbows can be divided into 45° elbows, 90° elbows and 180° elbows (also called returns). The following figure shows different types of elbows:

90° Elbow
45° Elbow
180° Elbow

Elbows are also divided into long radius elbows and short radius elbows. As the name suggests, the turning radius of a long radius elbow is larger, while that of a short radius elbow is smaller. The following figure shows the difference between a long radius elbow and a short radius elbow:

Long Radius Elbow
Short Radius Elbow

How to Indicate Elbow Size

The standard form of elbow size is:

1" SCH40, LR

1" SCH40 represents the outer diameter and wall thickness of the elbow respectively. LR represents a long radius elbow, and if it is a short radius elbow, it is represented by SR.

In addition to these three parameters, the elbow also requires a Center-to-End value (for 180° elbow, it is Center-to-Center), which defines the distance from the center of the elbow to the two ends of the elbow (for 180° elbow, it is the distance between the centers). It can approximately represent half the length of the elbow. The following figure shows the Center-to-End (A and B respectively) and Center-to-Center (O) of different types of elbows:

drawing of elbow

Conversion of Elbow Size

First, you need to calculate the outer diameter and wall thickness according to the Nominal Pipe Schedule. For example, 1" SCH40 corresponds to an outer diameter of 33.4mm and a wall thickness of 3.38mm.

Second, you need to determine the type of elbow. Then confirm the A, B or O of the elbow according to the different types and NPS values. The following lists the conversion tables of different types of elbows in ASME B16.9:

Reducer Size

Classification of Reducers

The function of reducers is to connect pipes of different sizes. Reducers are divided into concentric reducers and eccentric reducers. Concentric reducers can make the connected pipes have the same center. Eccentric reducers can align one side of two pipes. The following are the pictures of concentric reducers and eccentric reducers and the difference between them after connecting pipes.

Concentric Reducer
Eccentric Reducer
drawing of reducer

How to Indicate Reducer Size

Reducers are indicated in the following form:

2" SCH80 × 1" SCH40

You may have noticed that there are two Nominal Pipe Schedules on both sides of the "×", which respectively indicate the outer diameter and wall thickness of the two ends of the reducer. For example: 1" SCH40 means that the outer diameter of one end of the reducer is 33.4mm and the wall thickness is 3.38mm; 2" SCH80 means that the outer diameter of the other end is 60.3mm and the wall thickness is 5.54mm.

In addition to the outer diameter and wall thickness, the reducer also needs a height, which is represented by End-to-End (H). The value of H can also be obtained in ASME B16.9.

Conversion of Reducer Size

Whether it is a concentric reducer or an eccentric reducer, their H values are the same. Therefore, we only need to know its two NPS values to find the corresponding H value in ASME B16.9:

Tee size

Classification of Tees

Tee is a pipe fitting that connects three pipes and is in the shape of a T. Tees can be divided into equal tees (also called straight tee) and reducing tees. The three nozzles of equal tees have the same outer diameter and wall thickness, while reducing tees have different nozzles. Generally, the vertical nozzle size of reducing tees is smaller. The following figure shows equal tees and reducing tees:

Equal Tee
Reducing Tee

How to Indicate Tee Size

The tee is indicated as follows:

2" SCH80
or
2" SCH80 × 1" SCH40

The former indicates that it is an equal tee, which means that the three nozzles of the tee are of the same size, with an outer diameter of 60.3mm and a wall thickness of 5.54mm.

The latter indicates the size of the reducing tee. The two sides of the "×" indicate the parallel nozzle size and the vertical nozzle size respectively. The conversion method is similar to the reducer.

In addition to the outer diameter and wall thickness, the tee has two important parameters, namely the Center-to-End (C and M) in the parallel and vertical directions:

drawing of tee

For small-sized tees, the Center-to-End in both directions is the same. Large-sized tees have different C and M.

Conversion of Tee Size

The outer diameter and wall thickness of the tee can also be directly obtained through the Nominal Pipe Schedule. The values of C and M should refer to ASME Table in B16.9:

Pipe Cap Size

The pipe cap is a pipe fitting that plugs one end of the pipe. Since there are no different categories of pipe caps, its size is very simple:

2" SCH40

It also indicates the outer diameter and wall thickness of the pipe cap. In addition, the pipe cap also requires a length value E.

drawing of pipe cap

length E can be confirmed by the table in ASME B16.9:

FAQ

Why is the wall thickness of the pipe fittings confirmed by the Nominal Pipe Schedule?

Since the function of the pipe fittings is to connect the pipes, they must match the size of the pipes, and the standard sizes of the pipes are confirmed by the Nominal Pipe Schedule. That's why the pipe fittings need to follow the size of the Nominal Pipe Schedule.

What if the pipe fittings I need are not in the standard?

You can provide specific drawings to the supplier. However, non-standard pipe fittings require special molds. Therefore, if your quantity is small, I am afraid that supply will become difficult.

What are welded pipe fittings?

Welding can refer to both the production method of pipe fittings and the connection method of pipe fittings to pipes.
If you refer to the production method, it means that the pipe fittings are made of welded pipes. In contrast, seamless pipe fittings are made of seamless pipes.
If you refer to the connection method, then welded pipe fittings refer to pipe fittings that are designed to be connected to pipes using welding. The general welding method used for pipe fittings is butt welding. Therefore, welded pipe fittings almost all require chamfers. In contrast to welded pipe fittings are threaded pipe fittings, which are connected to pipes in the form of threads.

Conclusion

Pipe fittings are materials used to connect pipes. According to their different functions, pipe fittings can be divided into elbows, reducers, tees and caps. Due to the complex shapes of pipe fittings, a standard method is needed to indicate their sizes. However, the standard pipe fittings representation method does not conform to people's intuition. Therefore, we need to convert the pipe fittings size through the nominal pipe schedule and the ASME B16.9 standard.

We can provide you with different nickel alloy / superalloy pipe fittings according to ASME B16.9, and can also customize them according to your drawings. If you have any purchasing needs, please contact our email:
